Break out of the doldrums! Attend a Retreat!
Submitted by CreativeClearin... on Fri, 10/25/2013 - 15:02
I was fortunate enough this year to attend Art Is You, a creative art retreat that runs in several locations in the United States. There was so many different Instructors to choose from, that it was hard to narrow down and pick the classes I would attend. Even though I went for 6 days, it still was hard to choose! In the end, I chose 5 different Instructors that I have not had any classes with before- Michelle Ward, Joanne Sharpe, Andrea DeMeng, and Tracy Verdugo. The classes were all different, and I learned so much, and even more importantly, when I came home, my creative juices were on overdrive!
I am a very shy person, so going by myself was a big step for me. My friend, Karen who was meeting me late in the week, told me to look for another friend of hers in the meantime. She said I couldn't miss her, because she had purple hair. Um, at an Art retreat, there are LOTS of women with purple, pink, magenta, orange, etc hair! It is quite colorful, and inspiring looking around the room at them ;). As it turned out, I met several women that were lovely, and friendly, and fun. I never felt left out, even though there are women and men that have been attending for years! The Instructors are all down to earth, and willing to hang out with their students, which makes it even more fun. I was so impressed with the quality of the Art Is You retreat in general, and in particular the quality of the Instructors that taught and the folks that attended. It was a lovely escape from the competitive, crazy busy, rat race. I so enjoyed my week of hanging out with lovely, creative, supportive people! And we didn't have to cook, so for me that was an even better bonus!!
I realize I am lucky that I got to do this. I wish everyone got the opportunity to do it. I am starting to save up again for next year, because I really felt like it was worth it. I am quite fine with forgoing Starbucks coffee, and other non-essentials to put towards my retreat fund. Maybe I will even be able to give up my chocolate habit, and lose some weight as a side effect ;). If you can't afford a retreat, either because of time or money, why not try to get together with a friend or two for an entire day, and be creative? Tell the spouse and kids to get lost for the day (and take the dogs with them), and order some food to go, and just play. I promise ,you will end the day refreshed and full of creative juices energizing you!!
Along with the fun, and creativity, I also got to experience the spirit of generosity. One of the most generous spirits I met at the retreat was Lesley Venable and her husband, Tom. Tom made everyone at the retreat brownies!! They were yummy!
Lesley has donated a lovely altered art ornament for a giveaway. And a class! So we will have 2 winners for this giveaway!
