A Wondrous Time.....

 

We had a wonderful time on our travels to New Jersey for the holidays.  The drive up was very nice with a stop in Mechanicsburg to have lunch with Linda (Schultz) and Jean (Van Brederode) before heading off to Kecia and Jeff's to spend the Christmas Holiday. 

Gracie and Pepper came running down the driveway to give us our official welcome and Jeff, Dillon and Tom were the ones that unloaded our suitcases, presents and everything from our kitchen except the sink.  While they were busying themselves with those tasks I got introduced to Kashie and then I was like a kid looking at all of the wonderful creations and decorations that abounded inside their home and that astounded outside.  I felt like a little girl with stars in her eyes looking at all of the beautiful lights and angels and vintage images and......well everything!!!

We shopped for food on Friday and after we unloaded Tom and the food we were off to the flea market.  It was cold and windy but we were still able to grab a few goodies to purchase (well more than a few but we got really good deals on them all).  <smile>  We played in Photoshop some and got aggravated some and laughed a lot.

Then it was back home to the smells of cupcakes baking, rolls being made and menu plans were afoot.  Kecia showed me a few of her tips and tricks in the studio, we (Dillon) set gift opening time for Christmas morning and Tom was talked into making his wonderful french toast and bacon.  Mmmmmmmm very tasty.

Christmas morning was great....a yummy breakfast and being surrounded by Kecia, Jeff, Dillon, Tucker, Tom, Gracie, Pepper, Kashie, Lillie and Boo.  I received the most amazing Kecia necklace that Tom purchased for me at Art Is in October (can you believe he kept it a secret from me for so long?).  It is gorgeous!!!!  I also received one of Kecia's beautiful Christmas angels, two great boxes for my updated studio, some wonderful mica powder and so much more.  Tom received do rags, a Kecia snowman and goodies to eat.  It was an amazing morning!!!

Christmas afternoon brought more photoshopping, more cooking (roast, scalloped potatoes, macaroni and cheese, homemade rolls and cupcakes) and then it was off to bed for a good night's rest.  When we awoke on Sunday morning it was snowing just a bit and then that just a bit turned into a lot and then a lot turned into the blizzard.  I had never experienced a blizzard before but had always wanted to and now I have and I can check that off the list.  Of course I am sure that it was much more fun for those of us that stayed inside.  Jeff and Dillon shoveled us a path to the nest and just a few hours later the path was filled back up.  That morning Tom fixed eggs benedict for breakfast and they all loved it (I had cupcakes because I'm just not an eggs benedict kind of girl) and then we just snacked throughout the day.  Dinner that night was corned beef and cabbage and leftover mac & cheese and potatoes.   

Around 6:30 a.m. on Monday we realized that the heat was not working in the nest and Tom bailed on me saying it would only get colder.  I snuggled back under my 7 (or so) blankets and went back to sleep listening to the wind howl.  When I woke back up and opened the door I realized that I was going to need help getting through the 32 inches of snow that had fallen and the snow drifts that were in places 5 feet (or more) tall.  It was an amazing site, one I had never seen before, beautiful but also very treacherous to maneuver through. 

Monday brought some "just chillin" time, some playing around on the computer and then a good night's rest in Dillon's room (thanks again Dillon for giving up your space!).  At some point Lillie was with us and then Gracie came down for a bit.

Yesterday brought the time to trudge back out to the nest to get our suitcases, books and other sundries...thank goodness Tom did this while I began loading the truck down with our goodies for the drive back to Virginia.  The drive home taught a lot of lessons:  (1) Nobody anywhere knows how to drive in snow, (2) Even trucks with plows on the front get stuck in snow, (3) big heaps of snow with orange cones or flags on them are alerting you that cars are buried under that heap, (4) some buried cars are not marked and snow plows crash into them and (5) it is nice to know you have many friends praying for you to have a safe journey.

In Roanoke we had about 3-4 inches of snow on the ground but it was like a light dusting compared to what we had seen in NJ.  We unloaded the vehicle, watched a bit of TV and then slept in our own bed which was very nice indeed. 

This was a truly amazing holiday for us and we are very grateful for the invitation from the Devaney family.

Have you seen Kerin's beautiful work?

A little over a year and a half ago I had the pleasure of meeting Kerin Gale and Charley Slaughter at Art &  Soul in Hampton.  I took one of their classes and then through a few emails and some junking together in Portland I discovered that I had a wonderfully kind and talented new friend. 

Through our chit chats and emails and Facebooking she has really been an encourager for me and when I ask her advice on something I know that she pulls no punches and I love that!!  We also both share an little adversion to using glitter in our work (although I believe we are both trying to work through the anti-glitter stance we have taken in the past).

Kerin has literally been busting her patootie this past year (and longer) as she has been working on the beautiful creations that would fill her book as well as dealing with the whole publishing and editing stuff.  Now if you have not heard of Kerin it won't be long before you get to know her because the (yes THE) book is out!!!

Etsy Treasuries.....

Well, I just learned how to create a treasury and this is my third one in a week!!  I am loving this!!  It is a great way to help showcase those artists and items that you love.  You should try one.

One of those days....

 

I feel really good this evening, been working on some items, shipping off goodies purchased from the shop, receiving packages, creating and thinking over the last year....what did I do right, what did I do wrong and what could I have done differently.

After all of this thinking I decided that I had loved my friends the best way I knew how, I had tried to work through issues of my own (sometimes in good ways and sometimes in HORRIBLE ways), I have had to forgive and I have had to ask for forgiveness, I have witnessed friends and acquaintances in horrible circumstances, I have prayed for those I know and those I will never meet, I have held the hand of a woman I respected and watch her die with a dignity that I hope one day to possess, I have witnessed pettiness and generosity beyond all measure, I have created and taught, taught and learned and been amazed at the power of the artistic minded soul, I have worn my heart on my sleeves (a perpetual state for me) and tried to protect myself and move on from past wounds, I have realized (again and again) how blessed I am with my husband and how many times I took that blessing for granted, I have tried to be bold and state my opinions while also allowing others to state theirs, I have spoken honestly about things that have bothered me and sometimes been "punished for that honesty, I have been thankful for every friend, grateful for my students, and counted myself so very, very lucky to be asked to teach, I have mourned my Daddy's passing for 10  years now, and yearned for a better relationship with my family, I have seen hardship and I have seen fortune (and no we are not talking about monetary fortune), I have cried at the kindness that people have shown me and cried at what my "heart on the sleeve" perceives as a snub, I have loved and hated and wished and dreamed and worried and been afraid and, well, been human.

Thank you all for the friendships, love, sharing, teaching, generosity and support you have shown me.  I hope in some way I was able to repay you, to thank you, and to give back all of those things to you.

As we move closer to 2011 I wish you many blessings, prosperity, health and all things that your heart desires.

Dollar Store Snowflakes....

I purchased these neat snowflakes at the Dollar Tree store.  They are made of some kind of light styrofoam looking stuff...kind of.  You get 6 in the package for $1.00.

 

 

When I got home I thought they were not quite sturdy or "shiny" enough to hang in our front tree so I gathered a few supplies.....

 

and a few more....

 

Since these are going outside I just wanted to add shine.  However, if they were going to be made for inside I would definitely spruce (no pun intended) them up some more.

Put a bit of Aileen's Tacky Glue on a plate on your work surface.  Place your foam brush in the water and then into the tacky glue.  Mix together (you don't want this thick as the foam brush will tear the snowflake) to a watery mixture.  Paint the mixture onto the snowflake.....

Be sure to paint the glue mixture onto both sides before proceeding.

Place the "painted" snowflake into your disposable tray....

Sprinkle Crystal Glitter onto this side of the snowflake and then shake off any excess....

 

 

Flip the snowflake over and lay flat.  Sprinkle Mica Snow Flakes onto the other side (you can do the entire snowflake with either glitter or mica - I did them different to see how they looked)....

 

Shake off excess and set aside on a protected surface to dry.

Keep the excess glitter or mica in your disposable tray.  With the next snowflake you will just paint it with the glue mixture and then place it in the disposable tin to coat, flip to coat, shake off excess and then set aside to dry....

When dry using fishing line or ribbon to hang from  your outside tree.....
