I have been talking and emailing with Cousin Cat while researching the family history. She is Uncle Ooky's daughter. When she was a teenager, she and a boy she was seeing were downstairs in her family's split level house. I was upstairs with several other folks when Uncle Ooky, clowning around, got on his hands and knees and crawled across the floor to the railing and peered down to see what was going on. It would not have been half so funny if Cat's boyfriend had not looked up at that moment and seen him.
Uncle Ooky would do anything for a laugh.
Try these taters.
Make sure you leave the peel on the potatoes, to add extra flavor and texture to this comforting side dish. This rational appeals to a lazy person like me.
2 pounds red-skinned new potatoes
8 large garlic cloves, peeled
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup whipping cream
3 tablespoons butter
Place potatoes and garlic in heavy medium pot. Cover potatoes with water. Add 1 teaspoon salt. Bring to boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium; cover and simmer until potatoes are tender when pierced with skewer, about 25 minutes. Drain. Return potatoes and garlic to pot. Add whipping cream and butter. Using potato masher, mash until well blended. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
Makes about 4 cups.
